“I think that they have to have the power to influence, and that is across lots of things, just they have to be able to move other people, and you can define sales as the ability to get people to comply with your request, you can define leadership the same way, management, marketing to a degree is getting people to comply with a larger request, you know, publicly. But I think that fundamentally is a skill that people have to have if they're going to be successful at entrepreneurship. They have to have tremendous drive, whether that's a combination of towards or away, so they have a big mission that they really want to achieve or they have some very big fear that they're running away from. Either way I think the fuel works. Just from a pure entrepreneurship perspective, third piece is impulse control, is that they have to be able to say no to things on a regular basis for an extended period of time. And I think they have to be able to boil down the success of their business into inputs and outputs. Like, if you do not know the inputs that are going to get the output that you want, then what are you doing?”

“So, I routinely get asked the secret to success. And it just comes down to this. Number one, get better. Number two, never stop. If you do only those two things, you will win on a long enough time horizon. The problem is people convince themselves they no longer want something once they see the experience of how hard it really is. So I want to set this expectation for you as you head off to practice scripts, mark your calendar, and set your alarms. The work begins when your motivation ends. Just win.”

“For me it's always been about autonomy. I just be able, I want to be able to do what I find interesting, and that's been the core of it. And what I do will change, but the core of having the freedom to do it has been the center of it. And so for me I don't think my freedom has, I mean, not in recent history, my freedom hasn't fundamentally changed in any way. And so I would say that I'm the same level of contentedness as I was last year, but I find engagement in what I do, and that's, I'll give you my definition of happiness, which is doing what you like to do with people you like and doing that as much as you possibly can, and that's my simple definition.”

“Whenever I approach something that I don't know how to do, it always feels amorphous. It's like this big thing and I don't know where to start. Like how do I grab onto a piece of it? And so having gone and attacked like these amorphous things like start a business which actually means nothing. You have to break things down to much smaller steps of action. That's why for me the most basic thing to start a business is like get an LLC, open a bank account, have the ability to process money, and then ask a stranger if you can do something for them in exchange for money. As soon as you do those four things, congratulations, you're a business owner.”

“People will take a finite game, where you have known only known players, agreed upon rules, and a set outcome for winning, and they will apply it to an infinite game. So people are like, I want to, they apply a finite contract to health, they're like, I want to win health. It's like, you don't win health. Like, okay, you're in shape now what? You stay in shape, you keep staying in shape. I want to win at marriage. You don't win at marriage, you keep the marriage going, that's playing the game of marriage if you want to. You don't win at business, you keep playing the game of business. And so we want to take these finite contracts and put them on infinite games, and I think that's where people get in trouble because they're like, I have to keep moving the goal post. But if the goal post is to play, then you win by playing.”

“Let's start with the first one, which is nobody knows you exist. And if you're under $1 million in revenue, I can virtually guarantee you that basically everyone on Earth doesn't know you exist. And so, the first 4 hours of every day should be dedicated to solving that problem and going from obscurity to being aware.”

“almost all decisions that you make in the beginning you have incomplete data, and you have to make decisions anyways. And so it's growing comfortable with taking your best bad guess and being directionally correct rather than searching for a perfect answer, because a perfect answer assumes perfect information, which you can only have after you begin. And so in some ways making a decision is the perfect answer, so that you can get the information feed to then improve the quality of the decision later. And I think that one loop is what a lot of people miss out on, is they spend, they obsess for years sometimes on the perfect pick, the perfect business, the perfect job, the perfect mate, when most of the times beginning each step illuminates the next step, which means the information, the feedback that you get from walking gives you more about where to walk than trying to sit at the beginning in the darkness and pick a direction.”

“So I Define learning by same condition new behavior and so when you go to a video game and you battle through the level and you battle the boss if you keep doing the same thing to the boss and you keep losing then you have not learned because you have the same condition and the same behavior and so I often say that like for anyone who's listening to this podcast if the goal is to get better and you're like man I really want to learn something from this podcast if you listen to this podcast and then you're in the same exact conditions as you were before and then you do not change your behavior you learned nothing and so using that definition has at least allowed me to change my behavior faster which then goes into rate of learning which I Define as intelligence and so a lot of people are like man he's so smart but he just doesn't it's like well then if he doesn't change his behavior and he's in the same conditions he's a dummy he's not that smart and so if you are trying to battle the same boss over and over again and you don't change what you're doing and the boss keeps beating you then it's not the game's problem it's your problem you are the problem.”

“If you define work, at least the way I do, which is output, so I define work by output, and in order to get output it's volume times leverage. So how many times you do the thing times how much you get for each time you do it. And so that is the, do you work smart or do you work hard, it's you do both. You do as many reps as you possibly can and you are, you do it with the most leverage possible. So if I make 100 phone calls, the leverage that I can have there would be how skilled I am. So if I make 100 calls I might get 10 times more, and so I worked more, I had more output than somebody who has less skill, but the only way you get skilled is by doing more inputs, by working more. And so it's this virtuous cycle of doing more and getting better, and then you get more for what you do.”

“But if we define leverage as the difference between what you put in and what you get out, so if you have a lot of leverage, you put a little bit in, you get a lot out. If you have no leverage or low leverage, you put a lot in, you get a little bit out. And a lot of times people who are listening to this and are not making as much money as they want, they're putting lots of input in and not getting a lot out. They have low leverage opportunities. And so understanding how to get more for what you put in is the game overall.”
