Naval Ravikant on meaning & philosophy

Naval holds that life has no single given meaning, which leaves you free to make your own, and that the apparent paradox dissolves once you answer at the human scale, where the present moment holds all the meaning there is. Intellectually he leans Buddhist (consciousness comes first and the self is a fiction) and values internal freedom from reaction. He argues for living on your own terms for something larger than yourself, and wants both worldly success and enlightenment.

Find your own meaning, or accept there is none → Answer big questions at the level they're asked

In 2019 he offered "meaning is personal" and "there is no meaning" as separate answers. By 2025 he reconciles them: both are true, at different levels, and the question should be answered at the human scale at which it is asked.

Naval Ravikant on how to build wealth

2017–2025 · changed view

“Wealth is the thing that you really want. Wealth is assets that earn while you sleep. Wealth is the factory that with the robots as cranking out things. Wealth is the computer program that's running at night that's serving other customers. Wealth is even money in the bank that is being reinvested into other assets and into other businesses. Even a house can be a form of wealth, because you can rent it out — although that's probably a lower use of productivity — but land and actually doing some commercial enterprise. So my definition of wealth is much more businesses and assets that can earn while you sleep.”

Naval Ravikant on clear thinking & judgment

“The ultimate foundation are mathematics and logic. If you understand logic and mathematics, then you have the basis for understanding scientific method. Once you understand the scientific method, then you can understand how to separate truth from falsehood in other fields and other things that you're reading. So be very careful about reading other people's opinions, and even be careful about reading facts, because so-called facts are often just opinions, but, you know, with a veneer around them.”

Naval Ravikant on happiness

2015–2025 · changed view

“Happiness is that state when nothing is missing. And when nothing is missing, your mind shuts down, and your mind stops running into the future or running into the past, they regret something or to plan something. And then in that absence, for a moment, you have internal silence, and when you have internal silence, then you are content and you're happy.”

Naval Ravikant on meditation & the mind

2015–2025 · changed view

“And so busy mind can often rob you of peace of mind, because what— the peace that we seek is not peace of mind, it's peace from mind, right? So if you look at all the crazy activities you do to be happy, right, whether it's like trying to get laid and have an orgasm, or, you know, extreme sports, or looking at something beautiful, or taking a psychedelic, you're trying to get out of your own mind. You're trying to get your monkey mind to stop chattering at you for a moment. You're trying to get peace from the mind. And there are other better ways to do that. Most of the ways we try to get peace from mind are indirect, whereas if you understand things, if you see things properly, you will naturally slowly develop peace from mind.”
